The material basis for TangHerb in treatment of HIV / AIDS

1、Ingredients  of Tangherb

Astragali Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Glutinous Rice Root, Herba Erodii, Lonicera Japonica, Bupleuri Radix , Moslae Herba, Gossampini Flos , Hedyotis Diffusa, Solanum Nigrum, Picrorhizae Rhizoma, Ginkgo Folium, Carthami Flos, Spatholobi Caulis, Trapa Bispinosa, Chebulae Fructus, Granati Pericarpium, Portulacae Herba, Trichosanthis Pericarpium, Scorpio, etc.

 

2, Biological activities of herbs and compounds in TangHerb:

① Anti-virus activity:

HIV inhibition: A large dosage of intravenous injection of glycyrrhizin can kill HIV in serum.

HIV-RT inhibition: Flavonoids, tannin compounds (in Chebulae Fructus, Herba Erodii, Granati Pericarpium, Lonicera Japonica) have a role in inhibiting HIV-RT.

HIV integratase inhibition: Flavonoids, cyanine, phonetic acids and tannins can inhibit HIV integratase.

Protease inhibition: iridous, anthraquinone, tannins have this effect.

②Improvement of immune activity:

Immune regulation: Astragalus polysaccharide and liquorice polysaccharide have a significant role in enhancing the immune function and increasing T cells, B cells, and so on.

Increase Leukocyte: Latest pharmacological test indicated that the effect of increasing leukocyte of TangHerb is 3 times than that in the blank test.

③Anti opportunistic infections:

Herba Erodii, Lonicera Japonica, Trichosanthis Pericarpium, Bupleuri Radix, Moslae Herba , Granati Pericarpium, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Spatholobi Caulis, Chebulae Fructus, Hedyotis Diffusa, Portulacae Herba, Picrorhizae Rhizoma, the above TCM have the role of antibacterial anti-inflammation, inhibit M. tuberculosis, tumor, influenza, herpes zoster and so on, thereby reduce or delay opportunistic infections, and improve hair loss, diarrhea, fatigue, loss of appetite, skin itching, weight loss, shingles and other symptoms. Clinical test showed that TangHerb can effectively inhibit the HCV replication of HIV patients combined with HCV infection.

④ Anti-oxidant and anti-free radical activity:

Oxidation and oxygen free radicals are related with the integration of cellular DNA and virus DNA. TangHerb contains a large number of anti-oxidative compounds, therefore, it can achieve the role of anti-viral replication by anti-oxidation and anti-free radicals.

Excessive oxygen free radicals also cause demage to normal tissue cells. Strong anti-oxidation, anti-free radicals is one of the mechanisms for the improvement of some symptoms with TangHerb.

The fusion reaction of HIV with cell DNA is illustrated as follows:

DNA breakage and re-combination are closely related to active oxygen (. OH, H2O2, O • 2 -, etc.) acting on the DNA chain:

DNA· + O2 → DNA-O-O· (Peroxide free radical of DNA)

DNA-O-O· H· → DNA-O-OH (DNA hydrogen dioxide)

Promoting secretion of IL-2 and IFN-γ by immune cells:

Clinical pharmacology studies have shown that TangHerb can enhance IL-2, IFN-γ secretion to restore the human immune activity, so that it can recover function of inactivated CD8+ T-cell, thus slow down and inhibit HIV viral replication.

To sum up, the main mechanisms of TangHerb are: inhibition of viral replication, immunity improvement, antioxidation and scavenging free radicals, promoting blood circulation and lipid-lowering, protecting liver, antibacteria and anti-inflammation, inhibition of opportunistic infections.
